Richard Sherman believes someone from the Seattle Seahawks should be named Defensive Player of the Year and his vote goes to Earl Thomas.
“I would have to give it to Earl,” Sherman told Seahawks.com. “I think Earl is having a fantastic year. He’s flying around, tackling everywhere, forcing fumbles, getting interceptions. I don’t think there’s anybody out there playing better defense and I think our defense is No. 1 in the league. So usually the best quarterback with the best receivers isn’t punished for that, so don’t punish one of the best players on the best defense. So I think he should get it.”
Unlike J.J. Watt last season, there is no clear-cut favorite for the award.
“If there’s anywhere the defensive player of the year should be it should be in Seattle,” Sherman said. “Whether it’s myself or Earl.”
At 19 years and 342 days old, Jameis Winston became the youngest Heisman Trophy winner in history.
Winston is the second straight freshman to win the award after Johnny Manziel won last season.
"I cannot explain the feeling that I have inside right now," Winston said. "I'm so overwhelmed. It's awesome."
Winston ran away with the ballot, earning 2,205 points.
"I can't explain how truly intelligent he is," Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said. "He always wanted to know why he had success or why he had failure so he could either repeat it or fix it."
The finalists for the 2013 Heisman Trophy have been announced with Jameis Winston the prohibitive favorite.
Also on the list are Johnny Manziel, A.J. McCarron, Jordan Lynch, Tre Mason and Andre Williams.
Winston has led Florida State to the BCS Championship Game.
